Social Emotional Spotlight – Sam’s Tips: Backseat Fighting

By Sam Savin, LCSW
Social • Emotional Spotlight

“She’s kicking my chair!” “She’s looking at me!” This is not pleasant to listen to and you can only do so much from the front seat. We often get into a cycle of yelling, repeating “stop,” bribery, threatening, or a host of other strategies that aren’t particularly effective.

One strategy I’ve found to be the easiest and most effective is to ignore the behavior and use distraction. Instead of acknowledging the kicking or whatever is going on, I try to think of something that will quickly distract at least one child. “Hey Audrey, on my way here I counted 14 trucks, do you think we can count more than that on our way home?” This is such a simple way to change the dynamic in the car without confrontation.
